Rome Welcomes Reality Street Art from Estonia

31.07.2017

The streets of Rome now host a number of quirky characters from about a hundred years ago, brought to life by a mysterious street artist, Edward von Lõngus and augmented reality technologies.  The (R)estart Reality art project takes Lõngus on tour all over Europe to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his home country, Estonia, who also holds the EU presidency for the second half of 2017.

Rome is the second city after Brussels to welcome the time-travelling characters. “We have chosen several public locations in the city centre of Rome, all in a walking distance from each other, so it´s easy to explore the artworks,” explains Kadri Uus, Coordinator(R)estart Reality and one of the founders of NOAR art platform. “We invite everyone to come and wake the artworks to life using a smartphone. For example you will see Ats#Pets, an electric bagpipe duo from Soonda, jamming with the locals or Lembit, the King of the Hill, who speaks the ancient language of stones and knows all the secrets stored in rocks, enjoying his pipe. We´ll also see the reappearance of Miina and Enn, who spent some time being stuck in a mail server after a malfunction of a self-built time machine, after being hit by an eager graffiti removal crew in Tallinn.”

(R)estart Reality is a novel concept of public space art that through creative technologies and humour tells a story that all Europeans are part of. Site-specific artworks are building a bridge between the past and the present. In Rome, the right sites for von Lõngus´s artworks were found in collaboration with River of Trees initiative, the organiser of the currently ongoing B_Sides festival that transforms a number of public spaces in the city.

All the artworks are implemented during night time, as no soul is to recognize the infamous street artist Edward von Lõngus. “Edward von Lõngus represents a concept, not a person, leaving the spectators to wonder and search for deeper meaning.,” Uus said.

Lõngus´s  historic characters come to life via an augmented reality application for smartphones and tablets. The augmented reality app is available for at www.RestartReality.org/app. Scan the image on your phone and watch the it come alive. You can also find directions to the artworks from the app. Tip! Join the characters yourself for a cool video or Boomerang!
