Estonian Ambassador to Malta Presents Credentials

On Thursday, 25 November, Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to the Republic of Malta Merike Kokajev presented her credentials to President of Malta George Abela. Ambassador Merike Kokajev resides in Rome.

In the discussion that followed the ceremony, Ambassador Kokajev and President Abela acknowledged that Estonia-Malta bilateral relations are warm and friendly. “As small nations and European Union members, Estonia and Malta have a lot in common, which helps us develop our bilateral relations,” said Kokajev.

At their meeting, they discussed opportunities for co-operation in international organisations, primarily in the UN and Council of Europe, where as small nations they can reciprocally support each other’s candidacies. “One of the sectors with the greatest development potential between Estonia and Malta is tourism,” noted Kokajev. Another important sector for co-operation is education. “Maltese President Abela proposed that there be co-operation between the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies and the Eastern Partnership Training Centre being created in Estonia,” said the ambassador.

Merike Kokajev said that the Maltese president had words of praise for Estonia’s economic situation. Ambassador Kokajev thanked Malta for its support in our transition to the euro, in which one important factor was the report on Estonia’s euro eligibility compiled by Maltese member of the European Parliament Eduard Scicluna.

Merike Kokajev was born in Tartu in 1956 and graduated from Leningrad State University with a degree in French language and literature. Kokajev has been working for the Foreign Ministry since 1991. Ambassador Kokajev has worked in the protocol department, the embassy in Brussels, Estonia’s permanent representation in Geneva, the Foreign Ministry’s division for international organisations, and Estonia’s permanent representation to the UN. From 2005-2007 Kokajev was a member of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Prior to assuming her current position, Merike Kokajev worked in the Foreign Ministry’s state protocol department as the director of the division for ceremonies and visits. Since 2010, Kokajev has been the ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to the Republic of Italy and the Republic of San Marino.

Estonian Ambassador to San Marino Presents Credentials

On Wednesday, 27 October, Estonia’s new Ambassador to the Republic of San Marino Merike Kokajev presented her credentials to Captains Regent of San Marino Giovanni Francesco Ugolini and Andrea Zafferani. Ambassador Merike Kokajev resides in Italy.

In the discussion that followed the presenting of credentials, Ambassador Merike Kokajev noted that relations between San Marino and Estonia are friendly and warm, and within bilateral relations both sides are interested first and foremost in strengthening economic and cultural ties. “Since San Marino has become an interesting travel destination for Estonians, another co-operation sector is tourism,” noted Ambassador Kokajev. The ambassador stated that San Marino is very active in international organisations. “Estonia is interested in co-operating with San Marino in the UN and other international organisations,” said Kokajev.

Estonia established diplomatic ties with San Marino on 9 July 2003. San Marino is the world’s oldest democracy, having had that governmental structure since 1702.

Ryanair Announces First Estonian Routes

Ryanair, the world’s favourite airline, today (30^th Sept) announced its first Estonian flights from Tallinn, the capital city, with seven routes to Dublin, Dusseldorf (Weeze), Edinburgh, London (Luton), Milan (Bergamo), Oslo (Rygge) and Stockholm (Skavsta) from December 2010, which will see Ryanair carry 300,000 passengers p.a. through Tallinn, creating and sustaining 300 local jobs.

Ryanair celebrated its first Estonian routes by releasing 1 million €7seats for travel on over 500 routes across its European network in late October and November which are available for booking on www.ryanair.com until midnight tonight (30^th Sept). Ryanair’s seven new Tallinn routes go on sale tomorrow (1^st Oct) on Ryanair.com.

Estonian Ambassador to Italy Presents Credentials

On Wednesday, 22 September, Estonian Ambassador to the Italian Republic Merike Kokajev presented her credentials to Italian President Georgio Napolitano.

In the conversation following the credentials-presenting ceremony, Estonian Ambassador Merike Kokajev and Italian President Georgio Napolitano acknowledged that bilateral relations have been good and friendly over the years, but there is always room for development. “We need to develop economic relations between Estonia and Italy, and high-level visits would certainly help to achieve this,” stated Ambassador Kokajev.

Italian President Napolitano expressed interest in the current situation in Estonia’s economy and was informed in detail about Estonia’s transition to the euro. Estonian Ambassador Kokajev confirmed that the final preparations for adopting the euro are going according to plan and as of 1 January Estonia will be the 17th member of the euro zone.

Estonia to reintroduce border control at its internal borders during the meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers

For security reasons, Estonia will reintroduce border control at its internal borders during the unofficial meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers from 17 – 23 April in Tallinn. To ensure the highest possible level of public policy and internal security, controls at the border will be introduced at Estonia’s border with Latvia and at ports and airports.

Border controls will be carried out in accordance with the Schengen Borders Code and State Borders Act.

Works of Markus Kasemaa in Venice art exhibit

On 6 March at 18.30 in the Venice Arsenal, the awards ceremony for the international contest Arte Laguna 2009 and the opening of an exhibit of the works of the contest finalists will take place. Among the works are Markus Kasemaa's "Figures", which were finalists in the painting category. The exhibit will remain open until 27 March.

Estonia opened seventh Honorary Consulate in Italy

Foreign Ministry Secretary General Marten Kokk opened the Estonian Honorary Consulate in Bari in southern Italy on Friday, 11 December. The Estonian honorary consul in Bari is Giuseppe Iazeolla. The consular region of the new Estonian Honorary Consulate is the region of Apulia.

According to Foreign Ministry Secretary General Marten Kokk, Estonia-Italy relations are becoming livelier all the time, and Kokk expressed hope that opening an honorary consulate would give them even more momentum. “There are still many untapped opportunities for intensifying business and cultural ties on the practical level, especially in southern Italy. Good conditions already exist for co-operation between businesses in Estonia and the region of Apulia,” stated Secretary General Kokk.

Kokk noted that this is Estonia’s seventh honorary consulate in Italy. “Expanding the network of honorary consuls is important for Estonia, because the honorary consuls play an essential role in deepening bilateral contacts in the economic, cultural, educational, and tourism sectors. Honorary consuls also provide Estonian citizens with consular aid,” said Kokk.

The honorary consulate is located in Bari at Corso Vittorio Emanuele II n. 60, 70122. The honorary consul can be reached by phone and faxes can also be sent at the number +39 080 521 6007.

Giuseppe Iazeolla was born in Foggia in 1952. He has studied telecommunications and law. Iazeolla has worked as a lawyer since 1980. He actively participates in the activities of the Bari Lawyers’ Society. The honorary consul is also active in humanitarian activities. For example, he in involved in the Bari-Triggiano Marina Lions Club, which is part of the International Lions Club, and served as the president of the organisation from 1999-2000. Honorary Consul Iazeolla speaks Italian and English.

Works of Estonian artist Ene-Liis Semper in photo exhibit in Modena

From 13 December 2009 to 14 March 2010, the exhibit "History, Memory, Identity: contemporary photography from Eastern Europe" will be displayed in Modena. The photos of Ene-Liis Semper will be exhibited, among others. The exhibit presents 150 works by 29 artists from 18 different countries. In addition to photos, the exhibition also includes films and video installations.

Metsatöll concert in Bologna

On 3 October an organ concert by Andres Uibo will take place in Milan Cathedral at 16.00.

Estonia is waiving the visa invitation requirement

Estonia is simplifying the visa application process for people travelling to Estonia. On May 7 the Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu) approved an amendment that will waive the visa invitation requirement. The amendment will enter into force on July 30. Visa invitations submitted to and approved by the Citizenship and Migration Board before July 30 will be valid in foreign missions of Estonia as documents certifying the travel purpose within 6 months following the date of the corresponding decision,Waiving the visa invitation requirement means that those applying for visas no longer have to present an invitation approved by the Citizenship and Migration Board or other form of invitation, and from now on other documents will be sufficient to prove the purpose of travel.

The waiving of the invitation requirement will make the visa application process faster and easier. All other requirements will remain as before.

The most important thing for the visa applicant is to present his or her travel plans honestly and clearly and to fill in the visa application with his or her contact information and primary address of residence in Estonia. It is also required to submit documents that certify the purpose of travel and prove the existence of sufficient resources to cover return travel, sustenance and accommodation. It would also be useful for the applicant to indicate his or her connection to Estonia (for example, documents proving marital or family status, or a letter or email written by the person being visited in Estonia describing the person’s connection to the visa applicant).

The consul still reserves the right to ask the visa applicant or relevant individual or organisation to present oral or written explanations of the need for a visa. As before, the consul may request documents that certify the applicant’s intention to leave the Schengen area upon the expiration of the visa: return tickets, sufficient means of subsistence, proof of employment, proof of real estate in the country of residence, proof of ties with the country of residence (family ties, professional status) etc.

To prove the purpose of travel, the following supplementary documents could be submitted (the list is non-exhaustive):

For business travel: written confirmation from the company organising the meeting, conference, etc.; invitations/tickets to a fair or seminar; documents that prove the existence of business ties or certify the applicant’s connection to or status in a company.

For personal travel: documents confirming accommodation (hotel reservation, a letter or email which confirms that the receiver will allow accommodation for the visa applicant); travel package; copies of travel tickets.

Estonia at the Venice Biennale

At the 53rd International Venice Biennale Estonia will be represented by Estonian artist Kristina Norman's project After-War. The curator of the Estonian exposition is Marco Laimre.
The creator of the exposition in the Estonia pavilion, Krsitina Norman, deals with political, provocative, documentary and exploratory art. Norman's work is extremely context-centred-it is born of its relationship with its surroundings. After-War is an integral installation-based environment of videos, photos and objects that opens itself up as five different spaces. The work is based on an incident whose surrounding events are considered some of the most traumatic as well as most-discussed topics for Estonian society following re-independence.

The Venice Biennale is the oldest and largest international art forum. Estonia has been represented at the Biennale since 1997.

Fingerprints in travel documents

Starting from June 29th, 2009, all applicants of Estonian travel documents are required to give their fingerprints. The fingerprints are included onto the chip inside the passport cover. Children above the age of 6 are also required to give fingerprints, children below the age of 6 will not have to give fingerprints. As the result of compulsory fingerprint-giving, the procedure of applying for repeated passports by mail will change. In the future, it is possible to apply for a repeated passport by mail only in the case when the person has already received one passport containing fingerprints and less than 2 years have passed since the issuance of this passport.

It is possible to apply for a repeated passport by mail until June 28th, 2009 (passport applications bearing a postal stamp of a later date will not be reviewed without fingerprints - the applicant will have to go to an Estonian foreign representation or to Estonia to give fingerprints). Applications for repeated passports until June 28th, 2009 can be submitted by those persons, whose passport will expire soon (a few months are left until the expiration date) or by persons who for any other reason would like to receive a new passport. There are no changes in the procedure of applying for the initial passport (applications can be turned in at Estonian foreign representations, it is not possible to submit them to the Honorary Consuls). Estonian exposition at Venice Biennial of Architecture

The Estonian exposition Gas Pipeline (Gaasitoru) will be opened at 15.30 in Giardini Park in the old national pavilion area as part of the Venice Biennial of Architecture. Along one of the main pedestrian pathways, between the Russian and German pavilions, is situated a 63-meter-long, true-scale section of a gas pipeline.
The inspiration for the project is the plan to lay the Russia-Germany pipeline Nord Stream in the Baltic Sea. Gas Pipeline, located in one of the most-visited areas of Giardini Park, is a simultaneously massive yet palpable sculptural object, which will create an unexpected physical experience for the viewer. It is both abstract and acutely concrete, forcing the viewer to stop, relate, and adopt a point of view.

Professional Jewelry and Smithy Art Exhibition in Florence

The international jewelry art exhibition in Florence is featuring the work of the alumni as well as of contemporary students of the world's most peculiar jewelry school. The organizer is the Alchimia School of Florence.
Le Pagliere di Porta Romana, a building of the renaissance epoch is showcasing the works of 18 young students representing the Estonian Academy of Arts; the selection has been made by Kadri Mälk.
The installation is authored by Bruno Lillemets. A two-day conference is taking place, at which also the representatives of the Estonian Academy of Arts are making appearance.
